Horse Stable and Dry Barn Stabilization
St. Elizabeths East - Horse Stable, Dry Barn and Farm Weigh Station
- The Horse Stable building was constructed in 1901 in the Craftsmen Style and is a contributing element to the Saint Elizabeths Historic District. Agriculture was used as a form of patient therapy, with patients caring for animals and working the land. In 2020, the District completed stabilization of the building, and since at least 2021, it has been used as a marketplace, with vendors activating the space on Saturdays for much of the year.
The Dry Barn was built in 1884 to store feed and house livestock related to the hospital’s self-sufficient farming operations. It was one of two remaining farm buildings on the East Campus until it was tragically destroyed in a fire in December 2022. The destruction of the barn was considered a major loss for the city’s built environment and agricultural history.
